Not long after winning the National Championship in January, Michigan quickly shifted its focus with new head coach Sherrone Moore in charge and began hitting the recruiting trails. From there, it didn’t take long for the Wolverines to offer 2027 Richmond (Va.) Trinity Episcopal School cornerback Khalid Rainer who picked up his U-M scholarship offer on Jan. 30.
With so much time to go in Rainer’s recruitment, building relationships is key at this point, and Michigan was beginning to forge a bond between Rainer and coach Steve Clinkscale before the latter joined the Los Angeles Chargers in February. Still, the 5-11, 167-pounder maintains that Michigan is an appealing location for his footballing future.
“I have very high interest in Michigan even though Coach Clinkscale left for the NFL,” Rainer told Wolverine Digest. “Michigan is a dominant team coming off the National Championship. I would like to know more about the football life there and what goes on around campus.”
Right now, Rainer is running track as his spring sport, so it’s a bit difficult for him to visit schools until summer arrives, but the football offseason also allows the Michigan target to work on his acceleration and straight-line speed, posting an 11.7 second time in the 100-meter dash.
“As of right now I don’t have a current plan to visit Michigan, but I am planning to visit Michigan in the near future,” Rainer said.

Apart from Michigan, Rainer holds more than 10 other Division I offers, including scholarships from Power Five programs like Penn State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
For Rainer, high level athletics run in his family’s blood. His father, Wali Rainer, was a linebacker in the NFL for eight years, playing for the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and Houston Texans during that time frame. Rainer’s two brothers play Division I football in college, and his sister is also a collegiate softball player to round out the athletic family ties.
When away from the field, Rainer mentioned that he enjoys fishing for trout and bluegill in his spare time.
