Miami Legend Reggie Wayne Tells Wild NFL Draft Story

Indianapolis Colts appeared to be the only team without interest in the former first round pick

Reggie Wayne just announced his return as the Indianapolis Colts wide receivers coach despite the head coach transition for the AFC South club.

The former University of Miami great of course transitioned to the NFL with the Colts and Peyton Manning, forming one of the NFL's top wide receiver duos with Marvin Harrison en route to plenty of offensive success and even a 2007 Super Bowl championship.

Wayne is near synonymous with the Colts, though it didn't appear to be headed that way back in 2001 when he was going through the NFL Draft process. In fact, every other team appeared more diligent than Indianapolis leading up to the selection process at the scouting combine.

"I spoke to every team except one...That one team I didn't speak to was the Colts," Wayne Tweeted on Tuesday afternoon.

You know how the story ended, however.

The Colts selected Wayne with the 30th overall selection in the 2001 NFL Draft ahead of his Hall of Fame-worthy NFL career. Wayne wrapped up his time in the NFL in 2015 having registered 1,070 catches for 14,345 yards and 82 touchdowns.

Back at Miami, where he was named to the university's Hall of Fame back in 2011, Wayne helped The U to the 2001 national championship as a four-year starter, registering 173 catches for 2,510 yards and 20 touchdowns while sporting the green and orange.

Wayne is decorated in the record books for his time at The U. His 48 catches as a freshman in 1997 are still a Miami record while his receptions and yardage are second in the school's storied wide receiver history.
