Kentucky guard DJ Wagner discussed what led to the teams second half success against New Mexico State
Kentucky opened their season in Rupp Arena against the New Mexico State Aggies, where the Cats won 86-46.
The team shot 38% in the first half, then couldn't miss in the second half, shooting 58%.
Andrew Stefaniak of Wildcats Today asked Kentucky guard DJ Wagner, who had 13 points, two rebounds, and four assists in this ball game, what led to the second-half success.
Wagner had this to respond, "Just keep shooting. You know that's what we all tell each other. We are all supportive of each other and our coaches as well. Shots won't fall all the time, but we can't rely on that. We have to rely on other stuff like defense, just playing hard, most importantly. They fell in the second half, and that helped make a difference, but that's not what we really rely on. You know, we just like to play hard, and if shots fall, they fall, but if not, we want to still play hard."
It's great to hear how supportive this team is of one another, and they made that clear on the bench.
Every time a shot falls, the bench goes crazy, and this group just seems really tight.
Hearing that the Cats have enough confidence to keep shooting is excellent because, as Wagner said, they will start to fall sooner or later.
Something seems special about this 2023-24 Kentucky basketball team, and hopefully, we will see why soon against Kansas.
