Jackson State Routs Alcorn State In SWAC Opener

Jackson State cruises to a SWAC opening win over Alcorn State.

The Jackson State Lady Tigers (6-6, 1-0 SWAC) routed the Alcorn State Lady Braves (2-10, 0-1 SWAC), 74-46, in the opening game of conference play at Lee E. Williams Center in Jackson, Mississippi.

JSU's top scorer was Ti'lan Boler, who scored 17 points, while Andriana Avent contributed 14 points. Several Lady Tigers were in double figures: Miya Crump (13 points), Zikiya Mahoney (11 points), and Angel Jackson (10 points).

Jackson State cruised to a 31-21 first-half lead, shooting 27.6% from the floor and 33.3% from beyond the arc. The Lady Braves shot 33.3% and 12.5% from three-point range in the same period.

JSU's rebounding and defense took a toll as Alcorn State's scoring cooled down by hitting only 16-of-58 shots in the contest. The Lady Tigers outrebounded the Lady Braves 45 to 38, had 11 to 8 second-chance points, and 20 to 4 points off turnovers. Oddly enough, Alcorn scored 18 points in the paint compared to 12 for Jackson State.

Another factor was the Lady Tigers' bench, contributing 20 points to the Lady Braves' 4.

Jackson State will face Alabama State in Montgomery, Alabama, for a 5 PM CT tip-off on Jan. 11. Alabama A&M will host Alcorn State in Huntsville, Alabama, on the same day.
