Can Georgia's Offense be "Great" in 2024?
Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart believes Georgia's offense can be special in 2024, but do they have the wideouts to be an elite offense?
Getting Carson Beck to return to Georgia was a massive win for offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and the rest of the offensive staff at Georgia, but now the pressure is on to make sure they get the most out of Beck's final season in Athens.
The reigns are officially off of the senior quarterback and head coach Kirby Smart is ready to watch his guy let it rip. But can Georgia's offense be elite in 2024? Beck is probably the top-returning quarterback in the sport, but does a supporting cast that's losing Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey have what it takes to elevate to an elite level? Kirby Smart isn't sure, but he sees the promise.
"I think we have a chance to be great on offense." said Smart in a recent interview with ESPN.
"Great" is a strong term, especially in this era of SEC football. 2019 LSU was great. 2020 Alabama with Heisman Trophy winning wide receiver DeVonta Smith was great. Can Georgia's 2024 unit stack up with those offenses?
Taking last season into account, Beck was as good as any first year starting quarterback as we've seen in the confernce in a long time. And while the quarterback position is always important, it was wide receiver that made those teams truly lethal on offense.
2019 LSU and 2020 Alabama featured four of the NFL's best receivers; Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase for LSU and DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle for Alabama. What makes elite receivers so lethal, as Georgia found out against both of these teams, is that even if you do everything right on defense, those guys can still make you wrong. If Georgia is to stack up next to the "great" offenses of the past few years, they'll need a couple of those guys.
Luckily, the Bulldogs have plenty of candidates. Dominic Lovett, Dillon Bell, and RaRa Thomas are the leading candidates. Anthony Evans, Sacovie White, and Nitro Tuggle are young guys with a lot of talent. London Humphreys and Colbie Young are the transfer talents.
The quarterback talent is there. The offensive line is as good as it gets. The running backs room is a Georgia running backs room. The tight ends are elite. The key between this being an excellent offense and it being a lethal one will be the play of the guys on the outside.
