Georgia Basketball Set to Host Winthrop Eagles
Athens, GA. – The 2-3 Georgia Bulldogs are set to play the 4-2 Winthrop Eagles today at 5:00 PM at their home, Stegeman Coliseum. The Dawgs are currently 2-0 at Stegman while the Eagles are 0-1 at away games.
Winthrop, a strong team from the Big South Conference, is coming off a three-game win streak which includes wins over Elon (3-3), IUPUI (2-3), and Holy Cross (1-3). Meanwhile, the Dawgs have been challenged by some impressive opponents, and recently have a two-game losing streak with losses to Providence (4-1) and 12th ranked University of Miami (4-0).
Throughout the season, senior Jabri Abdur-Rahim has been the leading scorer for the Dawgs with 14 pts per game, and his success is expected to continue. In addition, in their showing against Providence, the Bulldogs were led by grad student Noah Thommasson who had 19 pts in the game. We may see this momentum carried over into the Eagles game with another breakout performance by Thommasson.
Defensively, freshman Silas Demary Jr. has been critical for the dawgs and will likely be so Friday evening. Demary Jr. leads the team in steals, 2.2 per game, and is third on the team in rebounds with 4.6 per game. The 6’5” guard from North Carolina has been a huge asset to the Dawgs with 11 steals on the season and is a tremendous addition to the Dawgs.

On the opposing side, leading this season for Winthrop, Kelton Talford, who averages 14 pts per game, maintained his strong presence with 18 pts in Winthrop’s recent win against Elon on November 19th. The expected match-up between Talford (6’7”) and grad student Russell Tchewa (7’0”) should be an entertaining watch.
Statistically, both Georgia and Winthrop are similar. Each has their go-to players offensively (Abdur-Rahim for UGA and Talford for Winthrop) and an evenly distributed set of defensive skills. It will be the role players and the smaller matchups that will make the difference in this game.
A win on the road for Winthrop would mean bringing their travel record to .500. While a home game win is important for UGA to help maintain their at-home record soon before hosting six games in a row. In addition, a solid performance against Winthrop University will help to prepare UGA for their upcoming battle against ACC opponent, Florida State.
