Deion Sanders on FSU's Playoff snub: "You got to understand big market football"
Deion Sanders kicked-off the opening day of college football’s transfer portal with an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America. Speaking with hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos Monday, Colorado’s head coach spoke about his first year with the Buffaloes, recent decommits, and promoted Season 2 of his Prime Video docuseries ‘Coach Prime.’ But right out of the gate, Roberts asked the former Florida State standout for his take on the committee’s decision to exclude his Seminoles from the College Football Playoff.
"That would’ve been tough for me as a coach. Coach Norvell did a great job of handling it and speaking his voice. But you got to understand big market football. You're not going to have a college football playoff without Nick Saban, the godfather, and the Alabama team. It's tough." Sanders told Good Morning America.
“That’s why I’m thankful they’re extending the playoffs next year and we [Colorado Buffaloes] will be a part of it.” Sanders was a two-time consensus All-American cornerback for the legendary head coach Bobby Bowden and the Seminoles from 1985-’88.
Sanders was also asked to weigh in on recruits who have recently decommitted from his program. “We haven’t lost anything that we truly can’t live without,” he informed Good Morning America.
When asked by Stephanopoulos how he would assess his first year in Boulder, Sanders responded by saying: “We really went out there and instilled hope. Not only in our fan base, not only in the school, the students, but the whole country. We instilled true hope. We just could not be consistent with where we are and what we had in the kitchen.” Coach Prime then went on to explain how he feels heading into Year 2. “Right now, I’m telling you I’m excited because next year is not hope, it’s expectation.”
Later in the interview, Sanders went on to elaborate more on the ‘Prime Effect’ and what to expect in Year 2. “I expect a lot more. Our fan base expects a lot more. The kids that play for us, they expect a lot more. And we're gonna give it.”
