BYU Football Wraps Up Spring Camp on Saturday
On Saturday, Kalani Sitake and the BYU football program will wrap up Spring camp. The NCAA permits 15 practices during the Spring, so Saturday will be the 15th and final practice for BYU over the last month.
There's been a handful of storylines to follow throughout camp - none greater than the battle for the starting quarterback spot. On the first day of camp, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick announced that the quarterback battle was down to two: junior Jake Retzlaff and senior transfer Gerry Bohanon. As of this writing, a starting quarterback has not been named and that's not expected to change on Saturday. The battle between Retzlaff and Bohanon will likely extend into the Summer and will be decided during Fall camp.
Even though all eyes have been on the quarterback during camp, the offense's priority has been establishing the run game. Aaron Roderick, in both interviews with the media, made it clear that re-establishing the run game was the top priority on the offensive side of the ball. New offensive line coach TJ Woods was hired to improve the play of the offensive line and the run game in general.
On defense, the theme has been year two in Jay Hill's scheme. This time last year, BYU was installing an entirely new defense. Now with a year of the new scheme under their belt, the BYU defense has done more refining than installing. Newcomers Jack Kelly and Danny Saili have made an instant impact and are expected to play right away.
With Spring camp in the rearview mirror, the attention will turn to the transfer portal. The transfer portal will open for 15 days beginning on April 15th. A few players will likely transfer our of the program. Keep an eye on the quarterbacks. BYU started Spring camp with 10 quarterbacks. Nick Billoups entered the transfer portal during camp, so there are still nine quarterbacks on the roster. At least one or two more quarterbacks will need to transfer out before Fall camp.
BYU will also look to add a player or two from the portal. Adding to the offensive line will be the top priority. If the right player becomes available, BYU could add players at other positions as well. Adding another running back and another cornerback would put BYU in a better position going into Fall camp.
