Leading Candidates For Saskatchewan Roughriders Coordinator Positions? Look at Mace Connections

Now that the Saskatchewan Roughriders have solidified their head coach, Corey Mace must get to work to build his coaching staff, starting with his coordinators.

There is a rejuvenated hope in Saskatchewan that the Roughriders are going to turn things around and bring back their historical winning ways.

On Friday, they introduced Corey Mace as their new head coach of the Roughriders with much excitement from the team. While the honeymoon phase will continue throughout the offseason, the time has come for Mace to start finding the right people to be his coordinators.

Due to his connections with multiple organizations throughout the CFL, Mace will have plenty of options available. He has been the defensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts for the last two seasons, which gives him strong connections to that coaching staff. He played and coached with the Calgary Stampeders, giving him plenty of additional viable options.

Let’s take a look at some potential candidates who could become Mace’s offensive and defensive coordinators in 2024.

Five Candidates for Roughriders Coordinator Positions

Offensive Coordinator – Mike Miller, QB Coach for Toronto Argonauts

Mike Miller has a long coaching career dating back to 1997. Miller has held offensive coordinator roles with the Arizona Cardinals, Montreal Alouettes, Edinboro University, and Robert Morris. He has spent the last two seasons coaching the quarterbacks for Toronto and helped develop Chad Kelly into one of the best quarterbacks in the CFL with a MOP award in 2023. With Mace and Miller being on the same staff for the last two seasons, it makes sense to bring him on and help get Trevor Harris back to a top tier quarterback.

Offensive Coordinator – Marc Mueller, QB Coach for Calgary Stampeders

Mace and Marc Mueller have known each other since Mace played on the defensive line and Mueller was once a defensive assistant for the Calgary Stampeders back in 2013. Mueller has held other roles with Calgary including running backs coach and quarterbacks coach. He was tasked with helping Jake Maier take over for Bo Levi Mitchell with Maier being one of the leading passers in the CFL in 2023. The long-term relationship between the two coaches helps make him an interesting choice for offensive coordinator.

Defensive Coordinator – Kevin Eiben, Linebackers Coach for Toronto Argonauts

Kevin Eiben is a long-time defensive coach for the Argonauts having been on the staff since 2017. Eiben has defensive coordinator experience with the University of Toronto for three years joining the Argos staff. It may be a challenge to bring him on as he might be the favorite to get promoted into Mace’s old position as defensive coordinator but should still be seen as a target for Mace.

Defensive Coordinator – Joshua Bell, DB Coach for Toronto Argonauts

Joshua Bell and Mace go back as they both played with each other on the Stampeders’ defense in their playing days. Bell has followed Mace around as he coached the defensive backs with Calgary from 2018 through 2020 and joined the Argos’ coaching staff in 2021 to coach their defensive backs as well. He has a good chance of joining Mace’s staff either in a similar role or he could be ready to take the next step and become defensive coordinator.
